I never realised this period in Wonder Woman ‘s history was so unpopular. I thought it was just about fun spy shenanigans. Oh, well. At least I am enjoying it and that’s all that matters really.

The body's Bledin Towers, a Gotham City apartment building - the gangster's the Ventriloquist's Scarface.

Batman'd entered the Towers in issue #4 to resolve a hostage situation - he found Scarface the hand behind it.

Many of the Towers' inhabitants were Scarface's minions - surrounded by them, the Bat fled, Scarface echoing.

" You've invaded me like a cancer cell. "

" The kind the gody deals with every day. " )

As a warning, "The Slavers" (specifically the later issues) deals with sexual slavery. To Ennis' credit it's taken very seriously but it's still raw reading.

Introducing [community profile] seasons_of_fandom, an interactive fandom challenge community/landcomm that allows you to create work for any fandom you can think of! We were previously [community profile] lands_of_magic, a name we ran under for over 10 years, but we figured we needed a facelift and a name change since it has been a long time since we had only focused on fantasy fandoms. We welcome TV, movies, books, games, music, anime, celebrities... almost anything goes! We have all kinds of challenges- writing, graphics, games, and some challenges that are miscellaneous fanworks! This round we'll also be trying out monthly drabble and icon contests.

We have four wonderful teams- The Spring Court, The Summer Court, The Autumn Court, and The Winter Court.

Sign-ups for new members start today, and though our first round under our new name doesn't start until August, we will have two challenges open before the round officially starts. To sign up, all you have to do is read the rules and fill out the survey here.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Pride Month: The People's Joker

I've talked a few times in the past how even though DC won't officially acknowledge it various creators have interpreted the Joker as being LGBT and how he's since become a pride symbol in some circles. More recently trans filmmaker Vera Drew came out with a parody called 'The People's Joker' which reimagines the Joker as a trans woman. It's not just a parody of the Todd Phillips film; there's a lot of comic pastiches throughout the film including an animated segment done in the style of 'The Dark Knight Returns'.

I'm not going to give it an in-depth review but it was a lot better than I thought it would be... while I respected the idea the trailers made it look like a YouTube fan video/adult swim bit that wouldn't work for an entire feature film. In reality there's a lot going on with the film; a lot of it is an autobiography of Vera Drew's experiences coming out as trans through the lens of the Joker (I.E. her mother's attempt at conversion therapy is depicted as being a trip to Arkham Asylum).

One thing that came to mind was how much a story worked with the Joker and how it might not have with, say, Spider-Man or Batman. I guess in addition to the queer readings to the character he's just become such a universal archetype that he lends himself to so many different interpretations.

If you're interested the film is available to stream on Mubi.

I included a trailer under the cut.
